A PlayStation Showcase is the perfect time for Sony to put out a clear road map for PSVR2’s future game library, just as the September 2021 PlayStation did for PS5. Already announced PSVR2 games like Journey to Foundation and Synapse could also use release dates. Hopefully, there’s more on the way in terms of new AAA VR exclusives from first-party studios, as well as much-demanded ports like Half-Life: Alyx. Sony has opted to mainly relegate PSVR2 to State of Plays or PlayStation Blog posts, but it needs to revitalize excitement for the platform by giving some of its games a spotlight in a big PlayStation Showcase. New game releases for the headset have been slow since its February 2022 launch, which is likely why the $550 headset has underperformed. The PlayStation VR2 is an impressive piece of virtual reality technology, but it lacks killer apps outside of Horizon: Call of the Mountain. There are three specific things I need to see from Sony if that PlayStation Showcase does come to fruition. With only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 confirmed to be on the horizon for 2023, Sony has a lot to prove during its next showcase. PlayStation has had a rough start to 2023, with console exclusive Forspoken garnering mixed reviews, the PlayStation VR2 impressing critics while underperforming in sales, and The Last of Us Part 1’s PC port being broken at launch. A third-party focused State of Play happened in 2022, but now Video Games Chronicle’s Andy Robinson and Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb are both suggesting that a more first-party oriented "Showcase" could be on the way sometime during the next month, potentially during the week of May 25.

Sony has to fill up its slate with exciting announcements, and there’s a good chance it’s been saving up some ammunition. This is a major PlayStation Showcase coming at a time when both the PS5 and PSVR2’s upcoming release schedule is unclear. Usually, I’d tell you to temper your expectations here, but all bets are off. Bloober Team’s upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake also seems like a shoo-in for the show, considering it’s a major PlayStation exclusive. More excitingly, we could also get a look at Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which is scheduled to drop this winter. With Final Fantasy XVIright around the corner, there’s a fair chance we see another glimpse of it here. The stream will also feature updates from third-party studios and indie creators, which opens up a lot of possibilities. Otherwise, expect some games that have yet to be announced. We do know that a Last of Us multiplayer game is in the works, as well as a Wolverine game from Insomniac, so there’s a good chance one of those could appear. We can expect to see a glimpse at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 here, but the first-party slate is a mystery otherwise.
That detail is significant, as we’re currently in the dark about what Sony has been cooking. Sony says it’ll be focusing on both PS5 and PlayStation VR2 games, including new titles from PlayStation Studios. Still, that’s unlikely to stop your favorite content creator from streaming it, considering the size of the event. Sony is welcoming content creators to co-stream the event, but it notes that the show will feature copyrighted music.
